Airbnb Group Reservation and Payments Function
UX/UI Case Study
The Airbnb case study explores the seamless integration of group creation, property sharing, and payment-splitting features. Users can easily create and filter groups, participate in chats, and divide payments, enabling a collaborative and effortless approach to group travel planning. This functionality is designed to enhance teamwork among travelers, reducing the challenges of coordinating group trips and simplifying the overall process for users.

Problem Statement
Group travelers lack a central way to coordinate preferences and split costs on Airbnb. They resort to external apps, leading to disorganization, limited flexibility, and one person often covering the booking and chasing others for payment.

We used Dovetail to tag Google Form data, helping us identify key themes and better understand participant feedback.

We used Mind Mapping and Crazy 8s to rapidly generate ideas, sketching 8 concepts in 8 minutes. This produced solutions like group chat, planning tools, cost-splitting, group discounts, and a concierge service, fostering creativity and improving Airbnb’s group booking process.

What went wrong and solution
Testing showed users struggled to find or recognize the new feature because it looked too similar to existing elements.
Solution: I redesigned the filter so Group Booking appears at the top and added a chat function in the menu, making new messages and payment updates more visible.

Results
A high-fidelity layout was created in line with Airbnb’s existing design to ensure a seamless user experience. A new group booking feature was introduced, including group chat, voting tools, and a flexible payment system that allows costs to be split or adjusted. User testing showed positive feedback, especially for the flexible group payment feature.
